RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – The Arkansas Tech women's tennis team won its third-straight match with a 7-0 sweep of Southwest Minnesota State on Monday out at the Chartwells Women's Sports Complex.
The clean sweep was the third registered by the Golden Suns (5-3) this season.
In their match with SMSU, the Golden Suns made quick work of the Mustangs (1-9) in doubles action winning all three flights.
Madalena Amil and
Meaghan Butler were first to complete their match and did so in shutout fashion, 6-0. Top doubles pairing
Daniela Baez and
Lea Grinberg were not far off with a 6-1 victory. To close out the clean sweep in doubles,
Sofia Beggiatto and
Aastha Dargude won their match, 6-4.
Shifting to singles action, Amil continued her strong run of play and was first to finish with straight sets win at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-0.
Isabella Major then gave Tech a 3-0 lead in the match with a 6-2, 6-3. Baez handled the clinching of the match at No. 2 singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win.
Beggiatto then won at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-1 followed by Grinberg's triumph at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-4.
The final match played came at No. 3 singles and it was ultimately Dargude who would emerge victorious, winning the tie-breaker 10-6. She split the first two sets, 6-4, 6-7(5).
The Golden Suns were scheduled to take on Northeastern State next in a road match on Wednesday, March 8, but forecasted inclement weather has pushed that match back to Wednesday, April 5. The new start time for the match in Tahlequah is at Noon.
With the change, the Golden Suns will now next be in action at home on March 14 against Southern Arkansas to begin GAC play.
