Golden Suns finish fourth overall as a team at GAC Championships

SHAWNEE, Okla. - Following a great first two days at the 2022 Great American Conference Outdoor Championships, the Arkansas Tech women's track & field team closes out the final day producing another solid performance with more All-GAC honors as they finish the meet fourth overall as a team. The Golden Suns rounded out the GAC Championships with the 800m finals, the 5K and the 4x400 relay.
 
FINAL RESULTS

800M FINALS
Arkansas Tech opened the last day of action with the finals of the 800m race as both Karina Maravillas and Felicity West qualified for the final round with their performances in the preliminary round of the event yesterday afternoon.

Crossing the finish line first for the Golden Suns with a time of 2:20.76 was Maravillas who took third place overall, which earned her the All-GAC nod for the event. West closed out the event for Tech finishing the race with a 2:27.48 time which gave her the eighth place finish, joining Maravillas on the All-GAC list for the event.

5K
In the 5K race, the Golden Suns saw Marcie Cudworth, Ashlynn Mays, Mary Beth Bailey, West, Mandy Sykora and Maravillas lace up to compete.

The first to finish the 5K in the group for Tech was Cudworth who came across the finish line with an 18:36.35 overall time earning her the third best finish in the race. Following Cudworth was Mays who finished at the fifth spot overall with an 18:50.12 time. Rounding out the top three finishers in the 5K for the Golden Suns was Bailey who clocked in with a 19:26.19 final time, which gave the freshman the seventh overall finish. Cudworth, Mays and Bailey each make the All-Conference list for the 5K for finishing in the top eight overall.

Coming in behind the top three finishers for Arkansas Tech was West with a 19:53.42 time and the 10th place finish in the race. Directly behind West was Sykora who finished 11th overall with a 19:55.85 time. Finally, closing out the group competing in the 5K for Arkansas Tech was Maravillas with a 19:58.72 final time, which earned her 12th place overall.

4x400 RELAY
The Golden Suns closed out the 2022 GAC Outdoor Championships competing in the 4x400 relay race, which was the first time the program had competed in the event. Maravillas, Morganne Browning, Bailey and West made up the four members for Tech competing in the relay race.

The group wrapped up the relay race with the eighth place overall finish and clocked in at a 4:29.93 time in their first ever attempt in the 4x400.

Head women's track & field coach Brock Hime was proud of the grit and determination his team showed in the GAC Championships.

"I'm so proud of this team. We brought nine women to the championships and placed 4th overall as a program. We were picked in preseason to finish 9th place and used that all spring as motivation. These ladies worked with a chip on their shoulder and proved what they were capable of when it mattered. Fight on!"
