ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - On the road once again following their split non-conference doubleheader with No. 3 Rogers State on Tuesday afternoon, the Arkansas Tech softball team picks up the solid 5-0 win against Ouachita Baptist in Arkadelphia. The Golden Suns move to 22-14 overall and hold a 12-6 record against Great American Conference opponents.
In the top of the first, second baseman Tymber Riley notched the first hit of the game for Tech putting a single out to right field. She would be thrown out at second following the contact from Caitlyn Wells on the next at-bat, but Wells would reach first on a fielder's choice. The Tigers managed to pick up a strikeout before Tech could score.
Shannon Lasey put up another elite performance in her 16th start on the year for the Golden Suns as she went the distance to throw a complete seven-inning game and held the Tigers scoreless on their own home field.Â
Lasey started the day by retiring her first three batters with a trio of ground outs in the bottom of the first.
Neither team could pick up a run until the fourth inning of play as a fierce duel between both pitchers was in the work.
In the top of the fourth inning, Wells crushed a leadoff single to right-center field to get one on for Tech with no outs. Following the play, Kacie Gibbins replaced Wells at first as the pinch-runner. The Tigers walked Kassie Mayberry to put Gibbins in scoring position for the Golden Suns.Â
Following the walk for Mayberry, Makenzie Goins reached first base on a fielder's choice as the Tigers tried to throw out Mayberry at second, but would commit an error allowing her to reach to load the bases still with no outs. Sydney Keaton would be the one to bring in the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly out to right field that allowed Gibbins to book it home to make it a 1-0 Golden Sun lead heading into the bottom of the frame.
Lasey once again went to work in the circle retiring another three straight for the fourth consecutive inning to stay flawless through four.
The top of the fifth inning saw two more for the Golden Suns as Riley and Wells crushed a pair of back-to-back solo bombs to give Arkansas Tech a burst of energy and a 3-0 lead.
A pinch hitter led off the top of the seventh inning for Arkansas Tech as Chloe Bryant replaced Jessica Williams in the lineup and managed to bust a single to centerfield. Riley picked up her third and final hit of the afternoon with a single up the middle to put herself on first and Bryant in scoring position on second base.
Wells would deliver the final run of the day demolishing a double to center field to score both base runners and give the Golden Suns the 5-0 lead. In the circle, Lasey would finish her outing in the bottom of the seventh going three up three down one final time to give Arkansas Tech the strong 5-0 win as she moves to 8-5 on the year. Lasey had three strikeouts and held the Tigers scoreless on the day.
The Golden Suns look to take the series win against Ouachita Baptist as they wrap up the weekend with a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is slated for noon tomorrow from Arkadelphia.
