Maravillas Takes First in the 800 as Golden Suns Open Season Strong at LSU

BATON ROUGE, La. - The Arkansas Tech Women's Track & Field team opened the 2022 season with a strong showing against some Division I programs at the LSU Purple Tiger that included a first-place finish in the 800 meters as well as a third-place finish in the 3000 meters.
 


FULL MEET RESULTS


 

1 MILE

In the one mile, freshman Mary Beth Bailey was the top finisher for the Golden Suns placing 11 overall with a 5:22.84 time. Next was sophomore Morganne Browing who was the first of four consecutive finishers for Arkansas Tech placing 14 with a time of 5:25.63. Directly behind Browning was sophomore Ashlynn Mays with a time of 5:27.73 and finishing at the 15 spot. Sophomore Calli Beshore placed 16 with a 5:28.60 total time in the one mile race. Felcity West closed out the four straight finishers for the Golden Suns with a 5:30.18 time and grabbing the 17 overall finish. Rounding out the finishers for Tech in the one mile was sophomore Mandy Sykora with a time of 5:34.19 and taking home the 19 overall spot.

800 METERS

The Golden Suns took home the gold in the 800 meters as sophomore Karina Maravillas edged out of second place by .1 seconds to earn her first place finish with a time of 2:26.73. Freshman Natalie Jennings finished the 800 with a time of 2:41.19 which grabbed her the fifth place finish.

3000 METERS

Once again the Golden Suns had a strong showing as freshman Marcie Cudworth crossed the finish line of the 3000 with a time of 11:05.87 earning her the third place finish. Cudworth was the second member of the Golden Suns to finish in the Top-3 in an event the team was participating in.

Head Women's Track & Field Coach Brock Hime was proud of the way his team performed in their first meet of the season. "Our opener at LSU had some really good things happen. Everyone raced hard, showing the strength we've been putting in. Looking at last year, we opened up a lot better this season which is exciting. A highlight was Karina Maravillas winning the women's 800 meter race. In 2 weeks we will see a big jump in performances across the board. I'm excited for this spring! Fight On!".

UP NEXT
The Golden Suns next meet will be on Friday, January 28 as they travel to Lawrence, Kan. to participate in the Jayhawk Classic.
