Wonder Boys fall in series finale at SWOSU

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – For the first time this season, the Arkansas Tech baseball team did take at least game in a Great American Conference series as Southwestern Oklahoma completed the sweep at home with an 11-4 victory on Sunday afternoon.

In the finale, the Bulldogs (18-10, 15-9 GAC) got off to an early 1-0 start with a tally in the bottom of the first. The Wonder Boys (20-11, 17-7 GAC) would get that run back a half inning later. Josh Detwiler started the frame off with a double to left field. Trace Maddux then singled up the middle to advance Detweiler to third. In the ensuing at-bat, Detweiler scored, but Maddux was erased on the base paths as the front end of a double play.

SWOSU started to gain separation in the bottom of the third with three runs on three hits. Over the next two innings, the Bulldogs scored three more runs to take a 7-1 lead through five innings of play.

In the top of the sixth, the Wonder Boys plated a pair of runs on three hits. Detweiler once more was the leadoff hitter in the inning and doubled for a second time. Maddux then traded places with Detweiler with a double of his own. Following a single to center by Jonathon Arrieta put runners on the corners with no outs, the Wonder Boys plated their second run of the inning thanks to a wild pitch.

SWOSU would get one of those runs back in the bottom half and added three more in the seventh.

The fourth and final run of the game scored by the Wonder Boys came in the top of the eighth.  That run was once again scored by a wild pitch by Maddux.

For the game, Maddux was 4-for-4 with two runs scored, two doubles and a RBI.

The Wonder Boys will now prepare for an extended stay at home as each of their final three weekend series are scheduled to take place at Baswell Field. The first of those is a three-game set against Northwestern Oklahoma starting on Friday, April 23.
