Dominant pitching, opportunistic offense and flawless defense lifts Wonder Boys to win over Reddies

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – The Arkansas Tech baseball team turned in an all-around great game in all three phases as they beat visiting Henderson State by a score of 11-2 out at Baswell Field on Saturday night.

On the mound, the combination of Patrick Miner and Shane Scott racked up 14 strikeouts with Miner accounting for nine Ks in 7.0 innings. Scott cleaned up the final five punchouts in 2.0 innings of work. Miner would earn the win and improved to 6-1 on the season. Six of Miner's strikeouts were called looking as he was painting the corners most of the night.

Between the two, Miner and Scott scattered eight hits and walked three. The lone blemish against the pitching of the Wonder Boys (18-8, 15-4 GAC) came in the top of the first as Henderson plated their only two runs of the game on a two-run home run out to right field.

On the offensive end, the Wonder Boys took full advantage of the free bases issued by the Reddies (14-11, 10-9 GAC) and at one point had scored five runs on just one hit. The free bases came in the form of six walks, five hit-by-pitches, five wild pitches, a balk, a passed ball and a catcher's interference.

Eventually, the Wonder Boys totaled 11 runs on 10 hits. One of the more impressive hits of that was a two-run home run off the bat of Evan Hafley in the bottom of the sixth inning. Hafley's fifth bomb of the season made it an 8-2 game at the time. Jonathon Arrieta later followed with a RBI single, his second of the game, to make it a three-run sixth inning.

The Wonder Boys would go on to score twice more with single runs in the seventh and eighth innings, but did so without the benefit of a hit. The first of those saw Garrett Crews on a throwing error by the Reddies' catcher as he attempted to back-pick Matt Robbins at first base, but his throw went into right field instead. The second run came on a fielder's choice off the bat of Drew Bailey as he hustled down the first base line to avoid an inning-ending double play.

In the field, the Wonder Boys did not commit an error. In the opposing dugout, the Reddies committed four errors.

The three-game series will conclude on Sunday afternoon as the Wonder Boys and Reddies will play a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
