Detweiler’s big day lifts Wonder Boys to 8-3 win in series-opener

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Junior outfielder Josh Detweiler collected his second four-hit game of the season as he went 4-for-5 with a double, a triple and three RBIs to help lift the Arkansas Tech baseball team to an 8-3 win over Ouachita in the series-opener on Thursday afternoon out at Rab Rodgers Field in Arkadelphia.

Detweiler's first hit of the game came in the top of the second inning and set the stage for the first runs of the game for the Wonder Boys (15-8, 12-4 GAC). Trailing 1-0 heading into the top of the second, the Wonder Boys got a leadoff single up the middle from Detweiler. On the next pitch, Trace Maddux smashed a two-run home run out to right field to swing the score in favor of Tech, 2-1.

Detweiler then was directly responsible for the Wonder Boys' next two runs of the game an inning later as he tripled into centerfield to score Evan Hafley and Garrett Crews. In the fifth, Crews hit a solo home run out to straightaway centerfield to make it a 5-1 game for the Wonder Boys.

The Tigers (5-16, 3-13 GAC) answered back in the bottom of the frame with two runs.

In the seventh, Detwiler notched his third hit of the game and his third RBI as he doubled down the left field line to score Matt Robbins. Detweiler's fourth and final hit of the game came in the top of the ninth as he reached on an infield single to third base. Three batters later, Detweiler came around to score on Kandon Bennett's two-RBI single that also scored Maddux and brought the game to its final tally of 8-3.

The Wonder Boys used a total of three pitchers in the opener. Patrick Miner got the start and moved to 5-1 on the year after he pitched 6.0 innings. In his time on the mound, Miner scattered six hits and allowed three runs (two earned), walked three and struck out six. Mason Griffin (Rogers, Ark.) pitched the next two innings and did not allow a hit. He did have to work around two walks and registred one strikeout. Nick Kovar pitched the ninth and ended up facing the minimum following a leadoff walk thanks to a groundball double play and a strikeout looking to end the game.

The series between the Wonder Boys and Tigers will conclude on Friday with a doubleheader scheduled to begin at Noon.
