BETHANY, Okla. – The Arkansas Tech baseball team tied a season-high in hits with 18 and scored double-digit runs for the fourth time as they blew past Southern Nazarene on the road on Friday afternoon by a score of 12-1.
Despite the volume of hits and runs that ATU ended up totaling, the offensive onslaught by the Wonder Boys (10-6, 8-2 GAC) did not take full effect until the late innings. Eleven of the 12 runs scored by the Wonder Boys against the Crimson Storm (1-13, 1-9 GAC) came from the sixth inning on. Prior to that, the Wonder Boys had scored just a single run in the top of the fourth. That run was pushed across on a single up the middle by
Kandon Bennett.
In the top of the sixth, the Wonder Boys plated their second run of the game as
Matt Robbins reached on a fielder's choice that scored Arrieta. An inning later, Tech doubled their lead out to four runs thanks to a two-run frame. Josh Detwiler accounted for the first run of the inning on a solo home run out to centerfield. The homer by Detwiler was his fifth of the season, increasing his lead on the team in that category. The second run for the Wonder Boys in the seventh scored on a RBI double down the left field line by
Drew Bailey.
Three more runs then crossed the plate in the eighth on the strength of consecutive doubles by
Jonathon Arrieta and Bailey. Arrieta's double plated two while Bailey traded places with Arrieta for his second RBI of the game.
Already leading 7-0, the Wonder Boys erased all doubt in the top of the ninth as they scored five more runs to push their lead out to 12-0. In the ninth,
Garrett Crews had a RBI double, Arrieta drew a bases loaded walk and then bases cleared during Bailey's at-bat thanks to a fielding error by the Crimson Storm centerfielder.
The Crimson Storm were able to avoid the shutout, however, as they scored a run in the bottom of the ninth. It was the lone blemish on an otherwise brilliant start by
Patrick Miner. Nearly going the distance, Miner pitched 8.2 innings and scattered just four hits. He would walk none and strike out nine.
Shelby Quiggins came on in relief and notched the final out for the Wonder Boys.
In totaling 18 hits, the Wonder Boys had five players with multiple hits. Bennett, Crews and Arrieta all had three hits while Bailey paced the team with four knocks.
The Wonder Boys and Crimson Storm are set to conclude their series on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at Noon.
