MONTICELLO, Ark. – The Arkansas Tech baseball team hammered out nine extra-base hits across both games of Friday afternoon's doubleheader at Arkansas-Monticello. Tech also received quality pitching in both games as the Wonder Boys swept the doubleheader over the Boll Weevils.
GAME ONE
The opening game saw the Wonder Boys (9-5, 7-1 GAC) flex their offensive muscle the most as they had six extra-base hits. Of the six, two left the yard with
Evan Hafley and
Josh Detweiler connecting on no-doubters while the other four went for doubles. Doubling in the opening game was
Kandon Bennett,
Matt Robbins,
Trace Maddux and Detweiler.
Hafley's dinger came in the top of the third and was a three-run blast out to straight away left field. At the time, that put the Wonder Boys up 4-0. Tech would go on to score two more times in the inning to take a 6-0 lead.
The Wonder Boy lead then grew by a run in the fifth as
Drew Bailey singled home Detweiler. A half inning later saw the Boll Weevils (3-6, 3-5 GAC) score their first run off of Tech starter
Patrick Miner to make it a 7-1 game.
In the top of the eighth, the Wonder Boys got the run back on a solo home run to left field off the bat of Detweiler. UAM scored their second and final run in the bottom of the inning to bring the game to its final of 8-2.
Miner would earn the win as he pitched 6.0 innings. He would scatter seven hits and two walks, but only allowed one earned run and struck out seven.
Mason Griffin (Rogers, Ark.) handled the final 3.0 innings with just two hits allowed, one earned run, one walk and four strikeouts as he picked up his second save of the season.
GAME TWO
In the second game, the Wonder Boys wasted no time in jumping out in front as they scored a pair of runs in the top of the first. Bennett led off the game with a single to left field and then was driven in by Robbins in the next at-bat on a double down the left field line. Later in the inning, Robbins scored on a Maddux single to right-centerfield.
An inning later, Robbins was in the middle of another run scoring for the Wonder Boys as he singled through the right side to score
Elijah Boyer, who doubled down the right field line two batters previously.
In the third inning, Tech struck for two more runs on a
Jonathon Arrieta sacrifice fly and a Detweiler single up the middle.
The early run production from the offense was more than enough for game two starter
Hayes Cox, who went on to earn his fourth win of the season and narrowly went the distance. All told, Cox pitched 6.2 innings and scattered five hits while allowing one earned run, walking two and striking out four. Getting the final out for the Wonder Boys and nailing down his first save of the season was
Nick Kovar.
The Wonder Boys have now won all three of their GAC series to-date and will look to pick up their second three-game sweep as Tech and the Boll Weevils will conclude their series with a single game beginning at 1 p.m.
