Wonder Boys pick up two wins to open GAC play against East Central

ADA, Okla. – After inclement weather called for a schedule rearranging, the Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys returned to the field to open Great American Conference play against East Central. Due to the possibility of more weather moving in, the Wonder Boys faced off against the Tigers in a double-header on Friday. Arkansas Tech picked up wins in both games, taking down East Central 9-1 in game one and 6-2 in game two.

GAME ONE
The Wonder Boys opened up the game early, going up 2-0 in the top of the first after a double from Matt Robbins and errors from the Tigers scored Robbins and Evan Halfey. Arkansas Tech stayed quiet in the second but brought in three more in the top of the third.

Robbins showed up again, knocking a triple then scoring off a single from Hafley. Jonathan Arrieta doubled to score Hafley before Arrieta scored off a single from Drew Bailey gave the Wonder Boys a 6-0 lead going into the bottom of the third.

Opening up the fourth, Robbins struck again with another double, scoring Elijah Boyer after he reached on catcher's interference. The Wonder Boys went up 7-0 and kept the Tigers quiet in the fourth.

With two outs in the top of the fifth, Arrieta answered the call, launching a bomb to left field to put the Wonder Boys up 8-0. It wasn't until the bottom of the sixth that the Tigers got on the board with a solo homerun. Both teams went scoreless the next two innings until Josh Detweiler pinch ran for Hafley and scored Arkansas Tech's final run, securing a 9-1 victory.

Robbins led the game, going 4-for-5 with two doubles, a triple two, two runs and an RBI, followed by Arrieta going 2-for-5 with a solo homer, two runs and three RBIs. Patrick Miner's seven innings of work proved to be more than enough as he allowed just one run off three hits, striking out nine in the win. Hayden Key and Mason Griffin each went an inning, not allowing a hit from the Tigers.

GAME TWO
In game two of their double-header, the Wonder Boys started out slower than the first, waiting until the fifth to score. The Tigers picked up their first run of the day in the bottom of the second inning.

Kandon Bennett put the Wonder Boys on the board after a single Arrieta reached on a passed ball and Bailey and Boyer singled. Robbins knocked his third double of the day to score Bennett and Boyer before he scored off a single from Hafley, giving the Wonder Boys a 5-1 lead going into the bottom of the fifth.

The Tigers tacked on another run in the fifth to pull within three, 5-2. Both teams were quiet in the sixth with Hayes Cox retiring all three batters in his final inning of work. Detweiler doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch. He scored the Wonder Boys final run again when Robbins grounded out, securing Arkansas Tech's 6-2 victory.

Cox went six innings, allowing two runs off five hits and striking out eight. He picked up his third win of the season. Nick Kovar finished the last inning, retiring all three batters, while striking out two.
