GOLDEN SUNS QUIET STORM, ADVANCE IN GAC TOURNEY

BENTONVILLE, Ark.Alex Edinger went 3-for-4, Alexa Wimberly went 2-for-3 with four RBIs, while Morgan Vaughan tossed four scoreless innings in relief to pick up her 12th win of the season as the Arkansas Tech Golden Suns softball team (39-19) downed Southern Nazarene (20-30) 10-2 in an elimination game in the Great American Conference championship tournament.

SNU put a pair of runs on the board in the second inning, but Arkansas Tech quickly knotted the game in the bottom of the second after a solo homer by Courtney Colunga and an RBI double by Edinger. Tech pulled ahead 4-2 after a two-run double by Wimberly later in the inning.

The 4-2 lead held for the Golden Suns, while the Crimson Storm threatened but could not capitalize on Vaughan, loading the bases in the fourth inning and putting runners second and third in the fifth. Meanwhile, the Golden Suns would add to their cushion, using an RBI single by Colunga in the fifth to stretch the lead to 5-2, and after Shanna Davidson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded Tech's lead stretched to 6-2.

A two-run single by Wimberly later in the fifth pushed Tech ahead 8-2, and one more run would come across in the frame on an RBI single by Janie Knowles.

In the sixth inning, Whitney Robinson bashed a solo homer to give the Golden Suns a 10-2 advantage and invoke the eight-run rule.

Vaughan picked up the win after scattering six hits in four innings of relief, fanning five and walking none.

The Golden Suns advance to face the winner of today's Southeastern Oklahoma/East Central elimination contest in a game tentatively scheduled for 5 p.m. today.
