HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — After being held to three hits in the opener, the Arkansas Tech Golden Suns softball team pounded out 11 hits in the night cap as the Suns (35-16) salvaged a doubleheader split with the No. 10 Alabama-Huntsville Chargers (36-10), dropping a 3-2 decision in the opener before taking a 6-5 win in extra innings in the finale.
The opener saw Golden Suns freshman
Morgan Vaughan dueling with UAH's Tyler Harrison. While Harrison kept Tech off-balance, the Golden Suns were still able to get on the board first as
Whitney Robinson scampered home on a wild pitch in the top of the fourth inning.
In the bottom of the inning, the Chargers took advantage of an error to post a three-run inning and claim a 3-1 lead.
Shanna Davidson led off the top of the sixth with a homer, but Harrison retired the next six Golden Suns hitters to seal the opening-game win.
Vaughan (9-5) was solid in the loss, scattering six hits over six innings of work and allowing three runs, only one of which was earned. The freshman walked two and fanned three.
The Chargers got off to a fast start in the opener, using three hits and an error to claim a 4-0 lead after the first inning. However, the Golden Suns responded in the third, using an RBI double by
Ashley Anderson, an RBI triple by Robinson, and a squeeze bunt by
Alexa Wimberly to pull to within 4-3.
UAH got one run back in the bottom of the third to push their lead to 5-3, and would hold the Golden Suns off the board until the seventh inning.
Needing to put runs on the board quickly, Anderson led off the seventh with a solo homer, and two hitters later,
Alicia Lowrey bashed a pinch-hit home run to tie the game at 5-5 and send the game to extra innings.
The international tiebreaker was in play to start the eighth, and a UAH error on a sacrifice bunt attempt was all that the Golden Suns needed to score
Jalissa Gum from second base, pushing Tech's lead to 6-5, and Vaughan set the Chargers down in order in the bottom of the eighth to seal the Golden Suns' win.
Vaughan improved to 10-5 after tossing 1.2 scoreless innings in relief, following a solid relief appearance by
Kelsie Barker, who scattered three hits over 2.1 innings of work.
The Golden Suns return to action this Friday and Saturday, hosting Southern Nazarene at the Chartwells Women's Sports Complex. First pitch Friday afternoon is set for 4 p.m. while Saturday's first pitch is set for noon.
