SURTEVALL SELECTED AS GAC NOMINEE FOR NCAA WOMAN OF THE YEAR

INDIANAPOLIS — Arguably the most decorated student-athlete in the history of the Great American Conference, Arkansas Tech golfer Rebecka Surtevall added another honor on Thursday being chosen as one of 147 conference honorees for the 2015 NCAA Woman of the Year award.

Surtevall is joined by Southern Nazarene's Bekah Stewart as the two GAC representatives, making the GAC one of only 12 Division II conferences with two honorees.

These honorees, selected from a record 480 school nominees, represent college athletes from 18 different sports spanning all three NCAA divisions. Of those recognized, 57 honorees competed in Division I, 39 in Division II, and 51 in Division III.

The Woman of the Year selection committee will next select the top 10 honorees in each division. These top 30 honorees will be announced in early September.  The selection committee will then choose and announce the nine finalists (three from each division) at the end of September. The NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics will cast votes among the nine finalists to determine the 2015 Woman of the Year.

The top 30 will be honored and the 2015 NCAA Woman of the Year will be named at the annual ceremony in Indianapolis on Oct. 18.

Surtevall recently graduated with summa cum laude honors, receiving her Bachelor of Science in business administration, successfully completing an athletic career that saw Surtevall set the standard for individual excellence in the Great American Conference.

A four-time Great American Conference Women's Golfer of the Year, Surtevall also became the second student-athlete in the short history of the league to be named the league's Female Student-Athlete of the Year. She was named a first team All-American and a second team Academic All-American, making her third appearance in the NCAA Division II golf championships to conclude her career.

Now in its 25th year, the NCAA Woman of the Year Award recognizes graduating female student-athletes for excellence in academics, athletics, community service and leadership.
