RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. — Fresh off of a second straight Great American Conference championship and NCAA tournament appearance, Arkansas Tech volleyball coach
Kristy Bayer announced Tuesday the addition of five players to the program in Marisa Drevenak, Kimberly Huff, Meredith Darnell, Sarita Stegall and Hunter Eshnaur.
Drevenak, a 5-7 libero, comes from Villa Duchesne in St. Louis, where she was named all-conference, all-district and second-team all-state as a senior in addition to academic all-state honors all four years. Drevenak also played club for St. Louis CYC.
"Marisa brings a wealth of experience on the court," Bayer said. "She has played at a very high level in a volleyball rich area since she was young. She has had solid training, which shows in her technically sound play. She will add depth to our defensive position."
Huff, a 6-3 middle blocker and sister of current Golden Suns middle
Katie Huff, was named all-conference, all-state and all-state tournament in both her junior and senior seasons at Springdale Har-Ber High School, while also playing for Fort Smith Juniors and Ozark Juniors.
"Kimberly will add size to our middle position," Bayer said. "She has a high reach and wing span. She has proven herself to be an efficient attacker. She will help elevate our blocking game.
"Kimberly is familiar with our program and has been around the Golden Suns tradition for years. We are excited to have her as a part of the program."
A 5-9 libero, Darnell comes to Tech from Russellville High School, where she was selected to all-conference, all-state and all-state tournament teams, as well as second-team all-Arkansas by the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, as she helped the Cyclones earn the 6A state title for the second time in three seasons. Darnell was named all-conference and all-tournament in 2013 as well, and played for the Golden Suns Volleyball Club.
"Meredith is strong in both serve receive and defensive," Bayer said. "She reads and moves well. Being a taller defensive player, she has good range on the court. She has been a part of a successful high school and club program, so she knows what it takes to win. Her competitive energy will fit in well with our program."
Stegall, a 5-7 setter, was a three-year letterwinner at Fort Smith Southside High School, earning all-conference and all-state honors her final two seasons, helping the Rebels to the 2013 7A state championship. Stegall played for Fort Smith Juniors and Golden Suns Volleyball Club, and is a National Honor Society member.
"Sarita is an incredible athlete," Bayer said. "She has tremendous foot speed. She will make a good transition to the college level as she possesses the physical tools to play at the next level."
Rounding out the class is 6-0 outside hitter Eshnaur, who brings numerous accolades with her from Russellville High School. In each of her final three seasons she earned all-conference, all-state and all-state tournament honors, culminating with a first-team all-Arkansas nod from the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette in 2014. Eshnaur was named 6A state tournament MVP in both 2012 and 2014 as she led the Cyclones to a pair of state titles. A National Honor Society member, she also played for the Golden Suns Volleyball Club.
"Hunter is one of the most highly recruited players in the state this year," Bayer said. "She is a huge offensive threat in the front row, as well as having sound skills as a defensive and serve receive passer. She has been a go-to player since she was young. We are excited to get a player of her caliber at Arkansas Tech. She will flourish as a six-rotation player at the next level."
